Maximum numbers.

Post by Coogs »

Trying to set the record straight here. There have been many different production numbers published regarding the Maximum. Some as low as a total of 400, one as high as 14,000 (which isn't too far off) Another popular number is 7700. Tell you what my research has found. Total production roughly around 15,000 I know of serial numbers in the high 14,900's The highest numbered one I have is 600-14210. This Max was given to Joe Callahan, head of Marketing for Remington Ammunition by Bill Ruger Jr. Now, according to Ruger Records 14210 has been "scrapped" Well, it hasn't been. And, according to Ruger Records (I spent many hours on the phone with a wonderful person, Wanda Santana) the highest serial number out there is 600-11588. So, just according to those numbers, just about 3500 Maxi's were scrapped. I figure the number of scrapped Maxi's at more than 5000. When I was going through the records with Wanda there were several "blocks" (2 or more consecutive guns) below 600-11588 that had also been scrapped. So, Total production: 15,000, "Scrapped" Maxi's: in EXCESS of 5000, Customized Maxi's: ???? May not be as many virgin Maxi's out there as you think! Thanks for lookin', Jack

Hello Guys,

Maybe I can shed some light on this, I have a document in my files from Nancy Padua to Steve Vogel dated 10/18/86. Vogel ask, "No. of .357 Maximums made?" She responded to Vogel in writing the following quantities of Maximums made, even broken down by barrel lengths. These quantities, in all probability would have been taken from a Ruger production report, I don't see her sitting there for hours counting the quantiles from the daybooks.

1985…… 5 guns, 2 W/7 ½“ bbl.
3 W/10” bbl.
1984……10 guns, 4 W/7 ½“ bbl.
6 W/10” bbl.
1983…… 8541 guns, 4357 W/7 ½“ bbl.
4184 W/10” bbl.
1982…… 706 guns, 313 W/7 ½“ bbl.
398 W/10” bbl.
9262 total Maximums manufactured

Always remember, the serial numbers are not relative to actual guns made. Coogs estimates that about 5000 numbered frames were scrapped, add that to the 9262 indicated above and you will see that serial numbering would reach to about 14,250, which is more or less in the ball-park with what he tells us.

Coogs, please clarify "Customized" in the following excerpt from your post. So, Total production: 15,000 "Scrapped" Maxi's: in EXCESS of 5000 Customized Maxi's: ???? May not be as many virgin Maxi's out there as you think! Thanks for lookin', Jack.

Should it read; So, Total production: 15,000, "Scrapped" Maxis in EXCESS of 5000.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I appreciate the ongoing relentless and dedicated research Coogs has been doing on the Maximums, good job.

regards, John

Punctuation, punctuation, punctuation! If ya put the comma's in there, like I just did on the edit.....Total production: !5,000, (added the coma) "Scrapped" Maxi's: in EXCESS of 5000, (there is another Comma) Customized Maxi's: ???? (meaning who knows how many) I hope that helps......Jack.
