Ruger SP101 (shows wrong caliber).

Post by 1Less »

Hello all from Tennessee. I purchased a SP101 online that showed it to be a 9mm. It was not a new gun purchase. When I attempted to load the gun it would not accept the ammo. the 9mm shell would only go half way into the cylinder. funny thing is it will accept a 38 cal. with no problem. I called Ruger and ask the lady that answered about the 9mm Parabellum cal. she did not know what I was talking about and wanted me to send here some pictures. After I sent the pics. she called me back with a shipping number wanting me to send them the pistol. I refused to send it in not having information on what I had purchased. I do not believe this gun has ever been shot because there is no powder burns on the gun or cylinder. I did not get the original box with the gun. Even though it will take the 38 round I have not shot the gun. Any information would be great. Thank you for your time.

If it will fully seat a .38 Spl round, it makes me think that the wrong barrel or the wrong cylinder was installed. You could, if you have the right equipment, measure the barrel diameter. Or, if you reload and have both 9mm (.355) and .38 (.357 or .358) bullets (just the bullet) see which one fits.

Could the barrel have been roll marked incorrectly, yes of course, humans are not infallible, mistakes happen. That is why Ruger wants the gun back, to see exactly what went wrong so they can correct it and determine the who, what, why, when, how it happened.

Having the box would have been a great help because it would have shown how Ruger shipped it out and that would help Ruger determine what happened.

Ruger's serial number lookup page says the gun left as a .38 Special.
The earliest KSP-921 I have in my notes is 570-26349 which is also a "used" gun with "U" suffix serial number, so I believe your gun was probably intended to be made as one of the first KSP-921's but had a .38 Special cylinder assembled to it instead. The problem is, you would probably never be able to prove the 9mm barrel was put on originally at Ruger.
This reminds me of the .454 Super Redhawk that I know of that was shipped with a barrel meant for .480. Good thing it didn't leave the factory with a .454 barrel and .480 cylinder!! Test firing would have found that though.
