Have an old model single-six marked Ruger .22 cal. single-six, 5 1/2 bbl., s/n 428232, magnum cylinder only, could this be could this be magnum only just not marked as such? This s/n would put it in that category.

    snowman,

The catalogue designation RSSM and RSSMX are always indicative of the 6 1/2"" barrel and therefore the primary cylinder would always be .22 magnum, even after the WRM frame designation was discontinued after serial number 342450 in late 1962. Your 5 1/2 Single-Six was probably shipped as RSS5-X and the primary .22LR cylinder was misplaced somewhere along the line.

This can be a complex subject with respect to the serial numbering sequences of the Single-Six during the 1962-63 era, it is explained better in Ruger Pistols & Revolvers.

    Hope this helps, John

Talked to a nice lady at Ruger today and she told me my pistol was shipped as a magnum, am going to send for a letter to see what the model code is.

You will want to be sure you are measuring the barrel correctly, from the front of the barrel to the front of the cylinder.
Would be curious to see if your letter from the factory does indeed verify your gun was shipped as a RSS5W .22 Mag. only...
With Ruger we can never say ""never"", but with none of these ever showing up previously, and such a model never being cataloged by Ruger, this has many of us wondering exactly what you do have there.

As an added note, RSSMW shipped as .22 Mag. only with a 6-1/2"" barrel are known as high as 398xxx, but these are super rare!
As all 6-1/2"" Single-Sixes shipped after about 340400 have a Single-Six rollmark on the cylinder frame instead of .22 WRF Win., the only way to verify an RSSMW after 340400 is by factory letter.
