Just got a Ruger MKI made in 1954 with a Ruger muzzle brake installed. Very nice conditon and paid $400 for it, good buy or not? Interested in what kind of box these came in. Have lots of Rugers including my dad's 1957 .44 mag Blackhawk with box and papers. All of his older Rugers have the boxes and papers with them. Great collection, I would rather have him back though.
Thanks

A T678 MK I from 1954 should have a serial # in the 7xxxx range. One in collector grade condition (95% or better) should bring about $400. Some of these were made with ""tapered ear"" bolts and are worth a bit more. Look straight down at the top of the bolt. If the sides of the bolt taper in, in you have one. If they are straight sided, you have a regular bolt.

The muzzle brake is an add on. Could have been shipped from the factory in the box (uninstalled) with the pistol or could have been purchased separately. There were two types. The rarer one has ""Inc"" at the end of the Sturm Ruger & Co and is probably worth twice as much as the regular one.

Bottom line is sounds like you did good.

Your question about the box.

From Chad Hiddleson's Encyclopedia of Ruger Semi-Automatic Rimfire Pistols:
""15000 to 72301 in a yellow, red and black hinged ""TARGET PISTOL"" box with slick paper. 72420 to 307302 in a two piece yellow, red and black ""TARGET PISTOL"" box with slick paper.""

A hinged box is probably worth $200+ and the two piece half that much.

Muzzle brakes were not attached to pistols shipped from the factory since the pistol with muzzle brake attached would not fit in the TARGET PISTOL boxes. They were included in their own box.

Hiddleson publishes the Red Eagle News Exchange quarterly. It is a great source of info and pricing on all Rugers.

Can you gents post a photo of the muzzle brake installed and if available, in its stand alone configuration or with separate box?

There is a T678 with Brake attached currently up on Gun Broker. Item 815377416. Some good images of the item installed.

Also see pp 233-4 of Chad Hiddleson's, Encyclopedia of Ruger Semi-Automatic Rimfire Pistols 1949 - 1992.
