    I just acquired a Single Six, with the box. Pistol marked Ruger 22 Cal, Single Six, Serial number D503384. The end label is marked Single Six, 22 WMR, Cat number RSSM, 6 1/2 bbl. Box wax penciled on the right side with the serial number, however the gun is not stamped magnum. Thoughts? Thanks

    The magnum cylinder is serialized, last three digits, to the gun. The other cylinder is a long rifle cylinder and not marked. Perhaps added later.

    I just looked at my vintage single six and the gun is not marked for magnum either, but both cylinders a etched with the last 3 digits of the serial number. Mine, unfortunately, has no box to compare...

    When the .22 magnum Single-Six was introduced in 1959 the designated catalogue number was RSSM (Ruger Single-Six Magnum). All of these guns were fitted with a 6 1/2"" barrel only. When the factory dropped the WIN. .22 RF MAG. CAL. marking from the frame by 1963, they continued to designate them as RSSM which was indicative of magnum and the 6 1/2"" barrel. There never was an RSS6.

    RSS4 = 4 5/8"" barrel w/ .22LR cylinder only
    RSS5 = 5 1/2"" barrel w/ .22WRM cylinder only
    RSSM = 6 1/2"" barrel w/ .22LR cylinder only
    RSS9 = 9 1/2"" barrel w/ .22LR cylinder only

    Now, when they were designated RSSM, only a magnum cylinder came with the gun. When one was designated RSSM-X it came with a magnum primary cylinder and a .22LR auxiliary cylinder. The extra .22LR cylinder was marked on the face with the last 3 digits of the guns serial number. The primary WRM cylinder was not marked.

    RSS4X = 4 5/8"" barrel w/ extra 22 WMR cylinder
    RSS5X = 5 1/2"" barrel w/ extra 22LR cylinder
    RSSMX = 6 1/2"" barrel w/ extra 22 WMR cylinder
    RSS9X = 9 1/2"" barrel w/ extra 22 WMR cylinder

    The RSSM catalogue number was in use from 1959 - 1973 (Old Models only)

    I hope this clears it up for you.
