Hello John,

Your assumption is correct, the S in that location would indicate Seconds. They are more commonly marked on the side of the frame, both examples are rare and highly sought after. The factory may be able to verify the S (seconds) in a letter.

snowman, The catalogue designation RSSM and RSSMX are always indicative of the 6 1/2" barrel and therefore the primary cylinder would always be .22 magnum, even after the WRM frame designation was discontinued after serial number 342450 in late 1962. Your 5 1/2 Single-Six was probably shipped as RSS...
